A recent survey by Harvard Business Review Analytic Services reveals that while 60% of organizations see gen AI as a priority, only 48% feel they are ready to adopt it. The urgency is clear, with 83% of respondents believing their company will fall behind if they don't embrace gen AI. The slow progress is linked to a lack of preparedness across key areas.

The Major Hurdles to Adoption

So, what's holding organizations back? The primary obstacle isn't a lack of desire, but rather a combination of risks and unpreparedness.

Risk Mitigation: The most prevalent barrier to scaling gen AI is concern over potential legal, ethical, and cybersecurity risks. Organizations must take a calculated approach to risk, building layers of security and ensuring regulatory compliance.

The Human Factor: A significant skills gap exists as organizations rush to leverage this new technology. Effective change management is crucial to help employees embrace gen AI tools, which includes training programs and creating a culture that supports innovation while addressing job security concerns.

Inadequate Foundation: While a majority of organizations are in the exploratory phase, many are unprepared across several key areas. The survey found that more organizations feel unprepared than prepared in four of six areas, including employee skills, risk mitigation, data foundation, and organizational culture. The two exceptions are tech infrastructure and data foundation, where readiness is slightly higher.

Overcoming these challenges requires a proactive approach. The most popular efforts organizations are currently making to prepare for gen AI adoption are:

• Improving data and technology infrastructure (53%): This foundational work is seen as a top priority for over half of the surveyed companies.

• Developing guidance and governance (53%): Establishing clear rules for how gen AI should be used is equally important to organizations.

Companies that have successfully begun their gen AI journey often emphasize the importance of change management, training, and internal guidelines. They recognize that gen AI is a massive shift, much like the internet, and requires a structured approach to a successful implementation. This includes creating a feedback loop where ideas can be tried quickly, validated with users, and continuously measured for improvement.
